Self Reliance

Riepe is a simple village in Nepal that encapsulates so much. Here are examples of self-sufficiency; with ploughing, planting, irrigating, cropping, winnowing and milling, and with bee hives and coffee plants and the births of chicks, kid goats and calves.

From Riepe’s basic harvest comes staple food, and too, quarried and cut and gathered locally, are the materials for building the homes.

Riepe is truly a reflection of its surroundings and of its weather and of its peoples’ beliefs, with every blessing and every curse heaven sent.

Comfort

The joy of staying in a place of great natural beauty is complimented by being comfortable. Bedrooms are really charming and all are aligned for the best mountain views from your veranda or patio. Each has up-to-date en suite facilities. Your hosts will see that your needs are well catered for, starting with morning tea.

Guest are not crowded into small spaces; each farmhouse is some 30 metres or so from the next and it is a pleasant wander from house to house.

Meals are based on all the food-stuffs produced by the villagers.

Little piece of heaven

After an inspiring walk around the Manaslu Circuit, we visited Riepe and were blessed to stay there for two magical nights. The accommodation was amazing in and of itself... Riepe has a view that will kiss your eyes. The people there and the staff smile so genuinely and true it lifts the spirit. I don't know if I will ever get married, but if I do, my dream location would be this little piece of heaven... If you have the chance to go, do it!

The invaluable and unique experience

I would like to wholeheartedly say a huge thank you to this hospitable house and its owners for the invaluable and unique experience of living in clear lands with beautiful mountain views in a blooming garden in a real village, and with European taste, and attention to detail and comfort. It's a real home that's away from home. Where you want to go back. And we will definitely be back. And the evening national music and dances will remain in my memory.

Magical place in Nepal

This place is by far the most magical place in Nepal. It preserves the Nepal culture and architecture while making it comfortable for all guests. Waking up each morning and opening up the old wooden doors in your room is like waking up to a fairytale. If the skies are clear the view of the mountains are surreal. Do not miss out on seeing this enchanting place.

Idleness & Activities

Eco-travellers sometimes say there are three components to travel: ‘Going there’. ‘Doing things there’. And - most importantly - simply ‘Being there’. Riepe is perfect for yoga, whether individually or small groups. What’s more, Riepe and yoga go hand-in-hand, and mountain biking, motor biking and paragliding are suited to the surrounding terrain.

Beyond the terraced fields of paddy, the forest climbs up the hillside; it is best visited in a small group out of respect for bear, wild boar and leopard, although you are more likely to encounter timid deer.

For a longer leg-stretch and for views that rival Riepe’s, take a village guide and hike along the trails that lead to small settlements – some in ruins. Farther west still lie the Annapurna foothills, Begnas Lake and the outskirts of Pokhara.

Riepe's Future

Nature has so blessed these Himalayan foothills where generations have lived in harmony. However, such is the lure of city life and the chaotic energies of a fast changing world that the future of these ancient ways is of course threatened.

And yet, in the village of Riepe, old-style prosperity is finding fresh vigour; no longer the uprooting of people from ancestral homes, there is the drive to cultivate new cash crops – avocados and coffee for example – while Riepe’s visitor project is quite a small part in a village patchwork of viable enterprises.

Heritage, culture, tradition, agriculture and community are alive and well. Yes, this is how Riepe sees its future.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:

There are plenty of buses to Dumre along the Prithvi Highway from both Kathmandu and Pokhara. Then, from Dumre, there are frequent buses to Kalimati that travel through to Besisahar. Once in Kalimati, finding seats in a vehicle for the few kilometres up to Riepe is a simple, final step.
